I am sure you have heard of our Emoji Behaviour Chart!

In Prep Maroon we will be using this chart throughout the year.
This allows myself and other teachers to recognise students both positive and negative behaviour, but also for the students to take responsibility for their own actions in the classroom and at school.
Each day students start off at the ready to learn Emoji which is in the middle. Throughout the day, depending on their behaviour their peg will move either up or down. If students continue to do the right thing, follow classroom/school rules their peg will move up one emoji, if they have a fantastic day and do something extra special that a teacher notices e.g. helping a friend, participating in all activities not matter how tricky their peg will go to the top “Superstar Learner!”
However, if students make silly choices throughout their day (unfortunately) their peg will move down. This can be anything from not following our rules on the carpet, not listening to instructions once or repeatedly. It is important for students to understand why we have rules, not only to keep our classroom running smoothly, but to ensure everyone is safe and has the opportunity to learn and be successful.
When students move down the first step is orange – this means students are being warned about their behaviour and will stand for 2minutes as their consequence. After this time they will sit down where they were standing.
The second step – if behaviour continues is the yellow step – this means students must remove themselves and move to the “yellow” mat. Moving to this mat allows the student to cool down, think about their actions and not distract other children from their learning.
If behaviour persists students will move their peg to the third step which is the “green” mat. They will stand on the green mat located at the door. This again allows students to cool down, think about their actions, not distract other learners but also know that the next step if the behaviour continues is to be removed from the classroom and go to the office. If a child gets to the “red” step this means they will be sent to the office.
If students reach the red step and are sent to the office, parents WILL be notified. However, if students read the third step parents will not be notified unless the teacher feels the need too. Please remember positive and negative behaviour differs for EACH child.
This behaviour management tool has been working successfully in our classroom. It is fantastic to see children take responsibility for their actions and to come up with solutions on how to make situations better if negative.
PLEASE REMEMBER: Students ALWAYS have the opportunity to move back up the peg chart, for example if they are on the “green” mat, and change their negative behaviour to positive they may move their peg up. Remember we all have our good and bad days! Everyday is a new day! Students will ALWAYS start a new day on “Ready to Learn” regardless of their behaviour the day before.
